Mira Road Stabbing Probe Lone Wolf Angle Emerges in ATS Investigation

Handwritten notes reveal ISIS links as agencies examine digital trail of accused

Mumbai– The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad is probing a possible “lone wolf” angle in the Mira Road stabbing case, where a 31-year-old man allegedly attacked two security guards, with early findings pointing towards self-radicalisation through online content.

During a raid at the residence of the accused, Jaib Ansari, officials recovered handwritten notes referencing “lone wolf” attacks and the terror outfit Islamic State. According to investigators, the notes indicated that the stabbing incident was seen by the culprit as a “first step” towards joining a terrorist organisation.

Police said Ansari, a science graduate who had lived in the United States for several years, was residing alone in Mira Road and earned a living by providing online chemistry coaching. Authorities suspect that prolonged isolation may have contributed to his alleged online radicalisation.

The incident took place at a construction site in Naya Nagar, where Ansari reportedly approached two guards under the pretext of asking for directions. He allegedly questioned them about their religion and asked them to recite a religious verse. When they refused, he attacked them with a knife, injuring both.

The injured guards, identified as Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, are currently undergoing treatment. The case was later transferred to the ATS after a possible religious motive surfaced.

Investigators are now analysing Ansari’s mobile phone and laptop to trace his digital footprint and determine whether he had any contact with extremist handlers or networks.

Reacting to the case, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said preliminary findings suggest self-radicalisation, adding that agencies including the National Investigation Agency are assisting in the probe. He emphasised that the investigation will also focus on identifying any broader network or conspiracy behind the incident.
