Marine Drive crash: Three dead as speeding sports bike hits senior citizen in Mumbai

Teen rider and friend die along with pedestrian after high-speed collision near traffic signal

Mumbai- A high-speed accident on Mumbai’s Marine Drive claimed three lives early Monday morning after a sports bike carrying two teenagers rammed into a senior citizen crossing the road.

Police identified the victims as 19-year-old Krishna Desai, who was riding the motorcycle, his 18-year-old friend Chandani Imamali Shaikh, and 66-year-old pedestrian Kishore Lamane. All three were declared dead on arrival at GT Hospital Mumbai.

The crash occurred around 5:45 am near the Kaivalyadhama traffic signal. According to investigators, the motorcycle was being driven at very high speed when it struck Lamane, a resident of Girgaum, who was crossing the road during his morning walk.

Officials said the impact was so intense that the bike skidded nearly 100 metres after the collision before crashing into two parked two-wheelers on the roadside.

Preliminary findings suggest that speed played a major role in the accident. Police added that the senior citizen may have misjudged the approaching bike’s speed while crossing.

The motorcycle, reportedly purchased earlier this month, was being used for an early morning ride. Police said the two teenagers had met for a ride after celebrating the rider’s birthday the previous day.

Family members of the rider said he had left home on Sunday evening and had last spoken to them late at night, assuring he would return soon.

Lamane, who had retired from a private firm, was known to be a regular morning walker. His family said he used to cross the same stretch daily.

Police have registered a case under provisions related to causing death by negligence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Further investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events.
