New Delhi, April 26, 2026: The Union Government has reassured that the country’s wheat production for the 2025 to 2026 season remains steady, even as farmers navigated fluctuating weather conditions. Officials noted that while the season brought a mix of favourable and adverse factors, the crop has demonstrated strong resilience due to timely interventions and improved farming practices.
The crop was cultivated across nearly 33.4 million hectares, marking a rise in acreage compared to the previous year. Importantly, authorities confirmed that no major pest attacks or disease outbreaks were reported during the growing period, ensuring that crop health remained largely intact.
Weather conditions, however, posed some challenges. Higher than usual temperatures in February shortened the grain development phase, potentially affecting yields in certain regions. Additionally, unexpected rainfall and hail incidents in a few pockets during the harvesting stage may have impacted grain quality on a limited scale.
Despite these hurdles, several positive factors have helped balance the overall outlook. A significant portion of the crop was sown early, allowing it to avoid peak heat stress later in the season. The expansion of cultivation area by around 0.6 million hectares has also contributed to offsetting localized losses. Farmers have increasingly adopted improved seed varieties that are more tolerant to heat and resistant to biological stress, strengthening crop performance.
Officials emphasized that low weed infestation during the growth stages further supported healthy crop development, enhancing productivity across major wheat producing belts.
Market arrivals and procurement figures from key states reinforce confidence in the output levels. In Haryana, wheat arrivals in mandis have already crossed the government’s procurement target, with over 56 lakh metric tonnes purchased so far, reflecting a notable increase compared to last year.
Madhya Pradesh has also witnessed a surge in procurement expectations. The initial target of 78 lakh metric tonnes has been revised upward to 100 lakh metric tonnes following higher production estimates shared by the state authorities.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra continues to show a consistent upward trend in wheat output, with production projected at around 22.9 lakh tonnes this season. Regions such as Marathwada and Vidarbha are contributing steadily to market arrivals as harvesting progresses.
Overall, the government maintains that while certain regions experienced weather related disruptions, the broader national picture remains stable. Increased cultivation, better crop management, and widespread adoption of advanced seed varieties have collectively ensured that wheat production stays on a firm footing compared to the previous season.
