Delhi police report suspected custodial death case; preliminary findings suggest dehydration, post-mortem and inquiry underway

New Delhi: A 34-year-old man died after his condition suddenly worsened at a police station in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area in what authorities are treating as a suspected custodial death case. The individual, identified as Anish, was reportedly picked up by patrolling staff during a night check based on suspicion and taken to the police station for verification.

Officials stated that he was brought in during early morning hours and later complained of uneasiness while inside the station. He was given water and initially appeared unwell, but his condition deteriorated further, with symptoms including breathlessness. Police personnel then rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead during treatment.

Preliminary medical observations have suggested dehydration as a possible cause of death, and initial reports have not indicated any external injuries or signs of assault on the body. Police also noted that staff present at the station, including duty personnel, confirmed no physical force was used.

The deceased, a resident of Bhalswa Dairy, was reportedly working with his family at Azadpur Sabzi Mandi and had a history of health issues, including substance use, as stated by relatives. Authorities further mentioned that he had been unwell and allegedly consuming alcohol in the days leading up to the incident.

Police have initiated inquest proceedings and ordered a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. A senior-level inquiry has also been launched to review the circumstances surrounding the case, and officials have assured that all procedures are being followed in accordance with legal guidelines and transparency norms.
