A controversy erupted around Lenskart after an internal grooming guideline surfaced online, sparking debate over alleged restrictions on certain religious symbols. The document suggested that items like bindi, tilak, and kalawa were not permitted for employees, while allowing specific forms of head coverings such as hijab.
The issue quickly gained traction on social media, with users questioning the apparent inconsistency in the company’s dress code. Critics argued that permitting one form of religious expression while restricting others raised concerns about fairness and inclusivity in the workplace.
Responding to the backlash, Lenskart’s founder and CEO Peyush Bansal issued a clarification, stating that the document being circulated was outdated and no longer reflects the company’s current policies. He emphasized that the organisation does not impose restrictions on employees expressing their religious identity.
According to Bansal, the company’s guidelines have evolved over time, and the older material was mistakenly interpreted as a current rulebook. He acknowledged that the document contained problematic wording regarding religious symbols, calling it an oversight that should not have existed.
Further addressing the issue, Bansal explained that the controversial content had already been identified earlier and removed. He accepted responsibility for the lapse, adding that the company remains committed to fostering an inclusive work environment where employees are free to represent their cultural and religious beliefs.
The debate intensified after public figures and social media users raised direct questions about the policy. Among them was author Shefali Vaidya, who publicly sought clarification from the company’s leadership.
Lenskart reiterated that its workforce across India reflects diverse traditions and practices, and employees are encouraged to express their identities without restrictions. The company also stated that it regularly reviews its internal policies to ensure alignment with its values.
Despite the controversy, Lenskart continues to perform strongly as a leading player in the eyewear market, with steady financial growth and expansion plans. The incident, however, has highlighted the importance of clear and updated communication in corporate policy frameworks.
