New Delhi, April 16, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker on Thursday jointly emphasised the importance of ensuring safe maritime passage in West Asia and called for a durable peace in Ukraine, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
The statement was issued following high level discussions between the two leaders during the Austrian Chancellor’s official visit to India, where both sides reviewed key regional and global developments and agreed on the need to strengthen international cooperation in times of geopolitical uncertainty.
Both leaders underlined that secure and uninterrupted maritime routes are essential for global trade, energy supply chains, and overall economic stability, particularly amid ongoing tensions in key shipping corridors.
They also reiterated the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as the primary tools for resolving conflicts, with a shared view that escalation in any region can have wider consequences for global peace and security.
On the Ukraine conflict, both sides expressed support for a comprehensive and lasting peace framework, highlighting the need for respect for sovereignty and adherence to international law as the foundation for any settlement.
The Ministry of External Affairs noted that the discussions also touched upon broader strategic cooperation between India and Austria in areas such as technology, innovation, and sustainable development.
Officials said the meeting reflected a shared commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and ensuring stability in an increasingly complex global environment.
