Indian Railways Approves Massive 6,000 km Network Expansion Under ₹1.53 Lakh Crore Investment Push

Indian Railways Approves Record 6000 KM Expansion Under ₹1.53 Lakh Crore Investment in FY 2025–26

New Delhi, April 12, 2026; Indian Railways has approved a record expansion plan for the financial year 2025–26, sanctioning 100 major projects aimed at strengthening connectivity, improving efficiency and transforming the country’s rail infrastructure under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.

The approved projects collectively cover more than 6,000 kilometres of railway network and involve an investment commitment of ₹1.53 lakh crore, marking a significant surge compared to the previous year’s approvals in both scale and financial outlay.

According to official details, the current expansion reflects a sharp rise of over 56 percent in the number of projects, more than 114 percent increase in route coverage, and over 110 percent jump in total investment compared to FY 2024–25.

The projects include new railway lines, doubling, multitracking, bypass lines, flyovers and chord lines, all aimed at reducing congestion on busy routes and improving punctuality and passenger experience across the national network.

A major focus of the expansion is to strengthen connectivity in tribal and underserved regions while also improving freight movement through high density corridors and industrial belts across the country.

Key states such as Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh have received significant allocations, with multiple projects planned to enhance freight corridors, industrial linkages and passenger transport capacity.

Officials stated that the initiative is closely aligned with the PM Gati Shakti framework, which aims to integrate infrastructure planning and ensure better access to markets, healthcare, education and employment opportunities.

Several high value projects exceeding ₹1,000 crore have been included, such as major capacity enhancement works on routes like Kasara–Manmad, Kharsia–Naya Raipur–Parmalkasa, Itarsi–Nagpur and Secunderabad–Wadi.

The expansion is also aligned with the Mission 3000 MT target, focusing on boosting cargo capacity, improving energy transport corridors and enhancing coal and mineral logistics to support national energy security.

Railway authorities highlighted that these projects are expected to generate large scale employment opportunities while also boosting demand in core sectors such as steel, cement and construction materials.

The development is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency and strengthen India’s overall transport infrastructure in the coming years.

Officials further noted that improved connectivity will play a crucial role in integrating remote and tribal regions into the national economy by improving access to essential services and economic opportunities.

With this large scale expansion, Indian Railways aims to build a high capacity, future ready network that supports both passenger convenience and freight efficiency while driving long term economic growth.
