Silchar, Assam: Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for multiple infrastructure and development initiatives worth ₹23,550 crore in Silchar, marking a major push for connectivity, agriculture, and regional growth in the Barak Valley region of Assam.
Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister said the Barak Valley region represents a vibrant blend of cultures and languages, where Bengali, Assamese and tribal traditions coexist harmoniously. He noted that Silchar has historically served as a gateway to the valley and will play a crucial role in the region’s future development.
PM Modi said the newly announced projects would strengthen the region’s infrastructure and transform Barak Valley into an important logistics and trade hub for the North-East. He highlighted that improved rail, road and educational facilities would create employment opportunities and strengthen economic activity across the region.
He added that these connectivity upgrades would not only benefit Assam but also improve links with neighboring states and markets.
Among the key announcements was the Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor, a large-scale infrastructure project estimated at around ₹24,000 crore. According to the Prime Minister, this access-controlled highway will significantly improve connectivity between Silchar and states such as Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura.
He said the corridor will eventually strengthen trade routes toward South-East Asian markets, aligning with India’s Act East Policy.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the new Silchar flyover, which is expected to ease traffic congestion in the city and benefit students and commuters traveling to major institutions such as National Institute of Technology Silchar and Assam University.
In addition, he mentioned the electrification of over 2,500 km of railway lines in Assam, which will enable faster, cleaner and more efficient train services across the state.
Highlighting the contribution of farmers and tea garden workers to Assam’s growth, PM Modi said the government has transferred more than ₹20,000 crore to farmers in the state under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.
He also announced the establishment of the first Agriculture College in Patharkandi, which is expected to promote agricultural research and encourage young entrepreneurs to start agri-based ventures.
The Prime Minister reiterated the government’s approach of treating border villages as the “first villages of the nation” rather than the last. He said development efforts under the Vibrant Village Programme are improving infrastructure and living standards in remote border regions.
PM Modi praised the Assam government for granting land ownership rights to thousands of tea garden families, saying the move will provide long-term security and allow them to benefit from welfare schemes related to housing, electricity and drinking water.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that Assam is gradually emerging as a center for healthcare and technology development, citing the establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences and specialized cancer hospitals in the state. He added that the youth of Assam now have opportunities in advanced sectors such as semiconductors and technology.
Concluding his address, PM Modi expressed confidence that the ongoing projects would accelerate economic progress in the Barak Valley and contribute to the broader development of the North-Eastern region.
