Indian Railways Upgrades 54,600 km of Tracks, Boosting Speeds Across Network

Indian Railways Renews 54,600 km of Tracks, Boosts Speed & Safety in 2014–26

New Delhi, March 11, 2026: In a major push to enhance train safety and speed, Indian Railways has renewed 54,600 km of tracks between 2014 and February 2026. The upgrade has significantly improved the speed potential of the network, with over 80% of routes now capable of running trains at 110 km/h or higher, compared to just 40% in 2014. Tracks allowing speeds of 130 km/h and above have seen a three-and-a-half-fold increase, rising from 6.3% to 22.4% of the network.

Track renewal and modernization are carried out based on track age, traffic, and condition, ensuring trains operate safely at permitted speeds. Regular inspections are conducted through daily patrolling, trolley inspections, Track Recording Car (TRC) runs, and Oscillation Monitoring Systems (OMS), enabling timely maintenance and preventive action.

The upgrades include modern track structures with 60kg rails, pre-stressed concrete sleepers, fan-shaped turnout layouts, and H-beam sleepers on bridges. Other advancements involve Flash Butt Welding, mechanized tamping, rail grinding machines, advanced switch joints, and integrated monitoring systems, all designed to improve reliability, safety, and riding comfort.

According to Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, the modernization has transformed the network’s speed profile:

  • 130 km/h & above: 5,036 km (2014) → 23,713 km (2026)

  • 110–130 km/h: 26,409 km → 62,036 km

  • Below 110 km/h: 47,897 km → 19,923 km

Indian Railways continues to prioritize mechanization, advanced technology adoption, and predictive maintenance to ensure safe and efficient train operations across the nation’s rapidly expanding rail network.
