New Delhi, September 15, 2025 – Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reaffirmed that sustainability is “non-negotiable” in India’s development path while inaugurating the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting Exhibition hosted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Goyal highlighted India’s cultural commitment to living in harmony with nature and stressed that adopting high-quality global standards will strengthen free trade, boost product reliability, and enhance international collaboration. “Good standards not only ensure consumer welfare but also cut costs by improving efficiency and reducing waste,” he said.
Pointing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Zero Defect, Zero Effect vision, the minister noted that the government is working in mission mode to embed a nationwide culture of quality and sustainability. He added that rigorous standards—from toys to electronics—are vital for protecting consumers and meeting climate goals.
Goyal emphasized that India’s fast-growing electrical and electronics sector will be key to advancing energy efficiency and supporting the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy. He urged global cooperation to harmonize standards and create a safer, more sustainable future.
