Shreyas Iyer’s PBKS Create IPL History Against MI in Qualifier 2

New Delhi : In one of the most thrilling encounters of IPL 2025, Shreyas Iyer-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) scripted history by pulling off a record-breaking 204-run chase against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2, securing their place in the IPL final for only the second time in franchise history.

Powered by a sensational unbeaten knock of 87 off just 41 balls from captain Shreyas Iyer, PBKS chased down the target with five wickets in hand and six balls to spare, setting up a high-voltage title clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

This incredible run-chase not only ended MI’s 2025 title hopes but also shattered multiple records. Notably, Punjab became the first-ever team in IPL history to chase a 200+ total against Mumbai Indians. Before this match, MI had a flawless record—18 wins out of 18 matches—after posting scores of 200 or more batting first. That historic streak came to an abrupt end, thanks to Iyer’s masterclass under pressure.

Until now, the highest target successfully chased against Mumbai in the IPL was 196 by Rajasthan Royals in the 2020 season. PBKS’ 204-run chase not only eclipsed that but also set a new benchmark for the highest successful run-chase in IPL playoff history, surpassing Kolkata Knight Riders’ 200-run chase in the 2014 final against Kings XI Punjab (now PBKS).

Shreyas Iyer’s innings was one for the ages—full of elegance, power, and tactical brilliance. His ability to pace the innings and shift gears at the right time proved decisive. The chase was supported by crucial contributions from the middle order, but it was Iyer’s calculated aggression that ultimately tilted the game in PBKS’ favor.

Moreover, this match marked another major milestone for the franchise. It was the eighth time PBKS have chased a 200+ total in T20s, the most by any team globally. In comparison, no other team—international or franchise—has managed this feat more than five times. Among international teams, India, Australia, and South Africa have five successful 200+ chases each in T20Is. Among T20 franchises, MI, RCB, and Quetta Gladiators (PSL) have also achieved five.
