UP, Feb 10, 2025: A seemingly endless line of vehicles, stretching up to 300 kilometers, turned the roads leading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj into makeshift parking lots. Lakhs of devotees eager to participate in the world’s largest religious gathering found themselves stuck in their cars for hours on Sunday, some stranded hundreds of kilometers away from the event venue.
The massive congestion, which social media users dubbed the “world’s biggest traffic jam,” reportedly extended between 200 and 300 kilometers, primarily affecting vehicles approaching Prayagraj via Madhya Pradesh. The situation became so overwhelming that authorities in Madhya Pradesh had to halt traffic in various districts on Sunday, leading to severe delays and widespread frustration among pilgrims.
A day earlier, hundreds of vehicles heading toward Prayagraj were intercepted at different locations in Madhya Pradesh in an attempt to manage the traffic flow and prevent further overcrowding. Despite these measures, the sheer volume of vehicles created a gridlock, leaving many travelers stranded for hours with little to no movement.
Authorities struggled to manage the unprecedented rush, as countless buses, cars, and two-wheelers clogged the highways. Many pilgrims took to social media to express their frustration, posting images and videos of the never-ending lines of vehicles. Some described the experience as “a traffic nightmare,” while others questioned the preparedness of officials in handling such a large influx of visitors.
One stranded pilgrim lamented, “It is impossible to move toward Prayagraj today. The entire highway is jammed for nearly 300 kilometers. We have been stuck for hours without any sign of relief.”
The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the most significant spiritual gatherings globally, attracts millions of devotees, saints, and tourists. However, the overwhelming turnout this year has led to major logistical challenges, particularly on roads leading to the sacred city.
Local authorities have urged travelers to remain patient and follow traffic advisories. Meanwhile, additional police personnel have been deployed to ease congestion and regulate vehicle movement. With more pilgrims expected in the coming days, officials are bracing for further challenges in managing traffic around Prayagraj.
As the Maha Kumbh progresses, authorities will need to implement more effective crowd and traffic control measures to prevent such massive disruptions in the future.
