Katihar : At least eight people were killed, and two others were injured in a tragic road accident in Bihar’s Katihar district late last night. The accident occurred under the Kursela police station area when a four-wheeler SUV collided with a tractor on State Highway 77. The incident has shocked the local community, with all the victims reportedly returning from a wedding ceremony at the time of the crash.
According to the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Katihar Sadar, the accident took place around midnight. The SUV, which was carrying the wedding party, collided with the tractor, leading to the immediate deaths of eight individuals. Two others were critically injured and have since been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Local authorities confirmed that the accident occurred when the SUV, traveling from the wedding venue, was involved in a head-on collision with the tractor. While the exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined, preliminary investigations suggest that a combination of poor visibility due to the late hour and possible reckless driving may have contributed to the tragedy.
The deceased, who were traveling in the SUV, were identified as members of a family returning home after attending a wedding celebration in the region. Authorities have not yet released their identities pending family notifications. Meanwhile, the two injured victims, who sustained serious injuries, are being treated at a local hospital, and their conditions are reported to be critical.
The police and local rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene and worked to extricate the bodies from the wreckage. State Highway 77 was temporarily closed for the emergency operations before being cleared. The tractor driver, who suffered minor injuries, was taken into custody for questioning.
Katihar district has seen an increase in road accidents in recent years, raising concerns about road safety and infrastructure. This particular stretch of State Highway 77 has been identified as a vulnerable zone for accidents due to its narrow lanes and high traffic volume. Local residents and authorities are calling for better traffic management and the installation of safety measures along such high-risk roads to prevent similar incidents in the future.
