Foundation for Wayanad Landslide Rehabilitation Township to Be Laid Today

Kerala : The foundation stone for the rehabilitation township project for the survivors of last year’s Wayanad landslide will be laid this evening. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will officiate the ceremony at Elston Estate in Kalpetta, marking a significant step towards rebuilding the lives of those affected by the devastating landslide. The project, initiated by the state government, aims to provide permanent and well-equipped housing for families who lost their homes in the disaster.

The upcoming model township will consist of 430 homes, each built on a seven-cent plot. The houses will be designed to provide safe and sustainable living conditions, incorporating modern amenities such as community centers, a market, a Primary Health Centre (PHC), and Anganwadis to support the well-being of residents. In a move towards environmental sustainability, the township will also utilize solar power to meet its energy needs and implement water treatment mechanisms to manage and purify contaminated water, ensuring access to clean and safe water for all residents.

The tragic landslide in July last year severely impacted the Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Attamala areas of Meppadi Gram Panchayat in Wayanad district, resulting in the loss of 266 lives. Hundreds of families were displaced, and many lost their livelihoods due to the extensive damage caused to the region’s landscape and infrastructure. The Kerala government’s rehabilitation project is part of a broader initiative to provide long-term relief and support to those affected by natural calamities, ensuring that survivors are not only given new homes but also access to essential facilities for a better quality of life.

Apart from providing housing, the township will focus on economic and social rehabilitation by creating job opportunities and integrating necessary infrastructure for education, healthcare, and commerce. The government is also considering measures to ensure that the township is climate-resilient, minimizing the risk of future disasters. This includes adopting scientific land-use planning, strengthening drainage systems, and encouraging afforestation in the surrounding areas.

Speaking ahead of the foundation stone-laying ceremony, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized that the state remains committed to supporting disaster victims and rebuilding communities with modern, inclusive, and eco-friendly solutions.
