Arvind Kejriwal Responds to EC on Yamuna Row, Receives Patient Hearing

New Delhi : On Friday, January 31, 2025, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal visited the Election Commission (EC) office to submit his response to a notice regarding his controversial remark about “poison mixed” in Yamuna water. The Election Commission had previously expressed dissatisfaction with Kejriwal’s initial response and had granted him additional time to provide factual evidence to support his claims of the Yamuna river being poisoned.

Kejriwal’s statement had stirred significant controversy, prompting the Election Commission to seek clarity and justification on his accusations. During his visit, Kejriwal presented his reply to the EC, addressing the concerns raised over his comments. The poll body had issued the notice to Kejriwal under its code of conduct, aiming to ensure that political statements remain factual and don’t incite unnecessary panic or mislead the public ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

In related developments, the Election Commission had also introduced the Home Voting facility for the ongoing elections, allowing senior citizens and differently-abled individuals to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes. Launched on January 30, 2024, the initiative is seen as a significant step in promoting electoral participation among people who might find it difficult to visit polling stations. This facility was especially useful for those in the senior citizen category.

Notably, former Union Cabinet Minister and senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, aged 91, was among the prominent figures who used the Home Voting facility. He, along with his wife Tarla Joshi, exercised their right to vote from their residence. Both were registered as Absentee Voters under the Senior Citizen category. This gesture marked a notable moment in the ongoing electoral process, as it demonstrated the commitment to making voting more accessible for those who have contributed significantly to public life.

As the Delhi Assembly elections progress, the Election Commission’s efforts to ensure a fair, transparent, and inclusive election process, including measures like the Home Voting facility, are drawing attention.
