Mumbai : A Mumbai court has remanded Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi citizen, to five days of police custody in connection with the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The incident occurred on Thursday when Shehzad was caught trespassing at the actor’s Bandra residence and allegedly attacked Khan, causing injuries.
Shehzad, who worked as a housekeeper in a bar and restaurant in Thane’s Labour Camp area, was apprehended by the Mumbai Police early yesterday. During his court appearance, the prosecution requested 14 days of custody, claiming the need to investigate a potential “international conspiracy.” Prosecutors emphasized that Shehzad, being a Bangladeshi national without valid documents, might have received assistance from unknown entities to enter and remain in India. They argued that uncovering these details was critical to ensuring national security.
The defence counsel, however, refuted these allegations, asserting that Shariful Islam Shehzad possessed all necessary legal documents to reside and work in India. The defence also contended that the case was being exaggerated due to Saif Ali Khan’s celebrity status, labeling the conspiracy claims as baseless.
After evaluating the arguments from both sides, the court granted a five-day police custody for Shehzad to allow further investigation into his entry into India and any possible external connections.
The case has drawn significant public attention, given the high-profile nature of the victim. Mumbai Police sources revealed that they are examining CCTV footage and questioning locals in Thane to gather more details about Shehzad’s activities and possible accomplices. Law enforcement agencies are also coordinating with immigration authorities to verify the accused’s travel history and identity documentation.
The prosecution’s claims of a potential international link have added a serious dimension to the case. Authorities are keen to determine if Shehzad’s presence in India was facilitated by any organized network, considering the security implications of illegal immigration.
Meanwhile, the defence continues to maintain that Shehzad is being unfairly targeted and that his actions were isolated and not premeditated. They have also indicated plans to challenge the remand in higher courts if necessary.
