Veteran Congress Leader and Former MP Minister Arif Aqueel Passes Away at 72

Bhopal Mourns the Loss of Prominent Political Figure After Prolonged Illness

Bhopal, Jul 29  2024 :  Former Madhya Pradesh minister and senior Congress leader Arif Aqueel has passed away at the age of 72. Aqueel died on Monday in a private hospital in Bhopal following a prolonged illness, according to family sources.

Aqueel, who had a long and distinguished political career, was elected from the Bhopal North assembly seat six times. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and one daughter. He first entered the legislative assembly as an Independent MLA in 1990 before joining the Congress party. He won the Bhopal North seat in the 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013, and 2018 assembly elections but faced defeat in the 1993 elections as a Janata Dal-supported candidate.

As a prominent Muslim leader within the Congress party, Aqueel served as a cabinet minister in the governments led by Digvijaya Singh (1996-2003) and Kamal Nath (2018-2020). His passing has elicited an outpouring of grief, with both Singh and Nath expressing their condolences over the loss of a respected and influential colleague.
