The Impressive TimesIn Uttar Pradesh, 11 women reportedly took the first installment of ₹40,000 each from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme and ran away with their lovers.
The PMAY scheme provides financial assistance to poor and middle-class families for building permanent homes. The scheme requires the female head of the family to be the owner or co-owner of the house, and the funds are transferred directly to their accounts.
These women misused the scheme by taking the money intended for house construction and fleeing, leaving their husbands behind. This misuse was discovered when no construction activity began despite the funds being disbursed.
