India Beat New Zealand by 44 Runs, Set to Face Australia in Champions Trophy Semis

New Delhi : In a high-stakes Group A clash of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, India secured a commanding 44-run victory over New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This win ensured India finished as group leaders and will now face Australia in the semifinals, while New Zealand will take on South Africa.

After winning the toss, New Zealand opted to field first, looking to exploit early conditions under the floodlights. India’s top order struggled against the disciplined Kiwi bowling attack, losing early wickets. However, Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings with a well-composed 79 off 96 balls, playing crucial partnerships with Hardik Pandya (45) and Ravindra Jadeja (28). Iyer’s innings included six boundaries and a six, stabilizing India’s innings.

Despite frequent breakthroughs from New Zealand, India managed to post a competitive total of 249/9 in 50 overs. Matt Henry was the standout performer for the Kiwis, claiming a brilliant five-wicket haul (5/47) and consistently troubling the Indian batters.

Chasing 250 for victory, New Zealand got off to a steady start but soon found themselves in trouble as India’s spinners took control. Kane Williamson stood tall with a resilient 81 off 108 balls, playing the role of the anchor for his side. However, the Indian bowlers, led by Varun Chakravarthy, dismantled the Kiwi batting lineup with skillful variations and precise control.

Chakravarthy’s match-winning spell of 5/32 in 9.3 overs ensured New Zealand never built any significant partnerships. Kuldeep Yadav provided crucial support with two wickets, while Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja took a wicket each to complete a clinical bowling performance. New Zealand’s innings folded at 205 in 45.3 overs, falling short by 44 runs.

Varun Chakravarthy’s magical spell earned him the Player of the Match award. His ability to deceive the batters with his variations played a crucial role in India’s victory. Additionally, this match was special for Virat Kohli, who played his milestone 300th ODI.
