New Delhi, August 10, 2024 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi will release 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified crop varieties at a special event on August 11, 2024. The event, scheduled for 11 AM at the India Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi, will also include an interactive session between the Prime Minister, farmers, and scientists.
The new crop varieties include 109 types across 61 different crops, comprising 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops. Among the field crops, the varieties cover cereals, including millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, fiber crops, and other potential crops. The horticultural varieties encompass a range of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tuber crops, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants.
This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable farming practices and climate-resilient agriculture. He has also emphasized the importance of biofortified crops in government programs such as the Mid-Day Meal and Anganwadi schemes, aiming to eradicate malnutrition across India. The release of these 109 crop varieties is expected to not only enhance farmers’ incomes but also create new entrepreneurial opportunities in the agricultural sector.
