Nirmala Sitharaman claims the government has not raised taxes because it wants more revenue

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified that the decision not to increase taxes in the Union Budget 2024 was not driven by a desire for more government revenue. She explained that the budgetary decisions were based on detailed assessments and not merely on “back of the envelope calculations.”

Sitharaman emphasized that the government’s approach was focused on fostering economic growth and addressing broader fiscal objectives rather than increasing tax rates as a means to generate additional revenue. She assured that the budgetary measures were carefully considered to support economic stability and growth without placing additional financial burdens on taxpayers.
