Nainital, November 4- President of India, Droupadi Murmu, attended the 20th Convocation Ceremony of Kumaun University in Nainital, Uttarakhand, on Tuesday, where she emphasized that true education goes beyond academic excellence — it nurtures humility, compassion, and a spirit of service to the nation.
Addressing the gathering, President Murmu said that education is the cornerstone of a nation’s progress. “Education not only makes us self-reliant but also inspires us to contribute to the growth of society and the country,” she remarked, urging students to dedicate their knowledge to the welfare of underprivileged communities.
She described this as the “true form of religion,” capable of bringing lasting happiness and fulfillment.
Highlighting India’s rapid economic growth, the President said that the country remains among the world’s fastest-growing major economies. She noted that government-led reforms and policy measures are generating numerous opportunities for young people and called upon universities to encourage students to seize them with innovation and determination.
Stressing the importance of research and entrepreneurship, President Murmu appreciated Kumaun University’s commitment to excellence in education and innovation. She underlined the significance of adopting a multidisciplinary approach to ensure the practical application of knowledge and expressed confidence that the university would continue progressing in this direction.
Reflecting on Uttarakhand’s natural heritage, the President said that the Himalayas are a lifeline for the region, and it is everyone’s duty to protect and sustain their resources. She commended the University’s initiatives towards environmental conservation and community engagement.
Encouraging students and faculty to strengthen their social responsibilities, President Murmu urged them to engage with nearby villages, understand local challenges, and work towards finding sustainable solutions.
She further emphasized that the youth of today have a pivotal role in fulfilling the national vision of making India a developed country by 2047. “With your talent and dedication, I am confident that you will help shape a prosperous and self-reliant India,” she said.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu offered prayers at the Naina Devi Temple and visited the Shri Neem Karoli Baba Ashram at Kainchi Dham.
