New Delhi, March 7, 2024– In a determined effort to empower women and enhance their safety, the Delhi Police, through the Special Police Unit for Women and Children (SPUWAC), organized a self-defense workshop on March 7, 2024. The event saw the participation of 40 female delivery partners, predominantly associated with Zomato.
The workshop, aimed at equipping women with essential self-defense skills, was presided over by Sh. Ajay Chaudhry IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, SPUWAC & SPUNER, who also served as the chief guest. The Joint Commissioner of Police, SPUWAC, and senior managers from Zomato were among the dignitaries present.
The initiative, commenced in 2002, focuses on imparting martial arts techniques and practical skills. Participants are trained in utilizing everyday items like Dupatta, Pen, and Handbags for self-protection, addressing challenges such as chain or bag snatching and criminal assault. The program aims not only to enhance self-esteem but also to provide a comprehensive approach to personal safety.
The success of the initiative is evident from the fact that in the year 2023-24 alone, 65,139 girls received training, contributing to a cumulative total of more than 5,48,549 girls and women since its inception.
Recognizing the positive impact on society, the Delhi Police has expanded the program to include annual summer and winter camps held at various locations across Delhi during school vacations.
The recent workshop, specifically tailored for female delivery fleet members from Zomato, addressed the unique challenges faced by women working during odd hours. The training aimed to provide practical tools and knowledge to ensure their safety while on the job.
The Special Police Unit for Women and Children reaffirms its commitment to creating a safe and empowered environment for women in the city. Through continuous efforts, including routine camps and specialized workshops, Delhi Police aims to foster a society where women not only feel secure but are also empowered in every aspect of their lives.
