New Delhi, February 18, 2024 – In a significant move towards enhancing women’s safety and accessibility to law enforcement services, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora jointly inaugurated two All-Women Police Posts (AWPPs) in the central area of the city on Sunday.
Expressing his satisfaction with this historic initiative, Lt. Governor Saxena emphasized the importance of establishing more such posts across Delhi. “Today, we inaugurated two All-Women Police Posts (AWPPs). I am very happy with this historic step by the Delhi Police,” he stated, underscoring the critical role these posts would play in providing a platform for women victims to freely voice their concerns to female officers.
Lt. Governor Saxena highlighted the inspiration behind the establishment of AWPPs, citing the commendable performance of the Delhi Police’s all-women contingent at the recent Republic Day parade. He reiterated the commitment to bolstering the representation of women in the police force, aiming to achieve a target of 33 percent, in line with the vision of “Naari Shakti.”
Asserting the Delhi Police’s proactive stance towards gender diversity, Lt. Governor Saxena revealed the commencement of direct recruitment drives to bolster the presence of women officers within the force.
Following the inauguration ceremony, Lt. Governor Saxena personally oversaw the operational readiness of the newly established posts, ensuring their equipped state with necessary gadgets and trained personnel.
Detailing the strategic placement of the AWPPs, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) M Harsha Vardhan highlighted the significance of Khan Market and Shraddhanand Marg in the central district. The bustling Khan Market, renowned for its cosmopolitan ambiance and international allure, serves as a hub for diverse demographics, including foreign visitors and VVIPs.
Sub-Inspector Puja Saini has been appointed as the in-charge of the Khan Market post, supported by a team of nine dedicated women officers. The Khan Market post, operational since 2016, has played a pivotal role in upholding law and order in the area.
Similarly, the AWPP at Shraddhanand Marg aims to streamline the process for women complainants by ensuring the presence of female police officers.
Representatives from the Khan Market Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) were present during the inauguration, showcasing the collaborative efforts between the police and the local community towards enhancing safety and security measures.
The inauguration of these AWPPs marks a significant stride towards fostering a more inclusive and responsive policing environment, further bolstering efforts to create safer spaces for women across Delhi.
