Former Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif Appointed Vice President for Strategic Affairs

Tehran, August 2, 2024: Mohammad Javad Zarif, who served as Iran’s Foreign Minister from 2013 to 2021, has been appointed Vice President for Strategic Affairs by newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian. The announcement was made by the Iranian news agency Tasnim. This appointment marks a significant return for Zarif to a prominent role in Iranian politics.

Pezeshkian, who assumed office following a snap presidential election, won the second round held in early July with 16,384,403 votes. His main competitor, conservative former nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, received 13,538,179 votes. The election saw a total of 30,573,931 ballots cast, with a voter turnout of 49.8%. The snap election was necessitated by the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.

Zarif’s new role as Vice President for Strategic Affairs will involve significant responsibilities in shaping Iran’s strategic policies and international relations, reflecting Pezeshkian’s approach to his administration.
