Lucknow, June 4: Uttar Pradesh is set to undertake one of the largest plantation drives in the country on World Environment Day (June 5) under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for environmental conservation.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will launch the statewide campaign from the Kukrail Forest Area in Lucknow, where he will plant the first sapling and inaugurate the mega plantation initiative. Under the campaign, a record 5 crore (50 million) saplings will be planted across the state in a single day.
The Chief Minister will also attend the main World Environment Day function organized by the Forest Department at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan in Lucknow.
More than 200 saplings will be planted at the Kukrail Forest Area during the launch event, which will be attended by Forest Minister Arun Saxena, senior government officials, department heads, and other dignitaries.
Following the inauguration, plantation activities will be carried out throughout the day across Uttar Pradesh‘s 17 Municipal Corporations, 825 Development Blocks, 762 Urban Local Bodies, and all Gram Panchayats, ensuring widespread public participation.
The campaign is being coordinated by the Forest Department with support from the Rural Development, Panchayati Raj, Agriculture, Horticulture, and Urban Development departments. Saplings will be planted around Amrit Sarovars, ponds, roads, expressways, rivers, canals, educational institutions, and public spaces.
Schools, colleges, self-help groups, voluntary organizations, and local communities are expected to actively participate in the drive, turning it into a mass environmental movement.
