New Delhi May 15 2026: The Supreme Court has overturned a Delhi High Court order that had suspended the life sentence of former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case, directing the high court to reconsider the matter afresh.
The apex court’s decision effectively restores the earlier conviction proceedings, ensuring that the suspension granted by the Delhi High Court will not stand for now. The case, which has remained under intense legal and public scrutiny, involves allegations of sexual assault dating back to 2017.
The Supreme Court observed that the matter requires a fresh judicial examination and instructed the high court to hear the case again in detail. The ruling marks a significant development in one of the most closely followed criminal cases in recent years.
Sengar, a former legislator, was convicted in connection with the Unnao rape case, which also drew widespread attention due to its political and legal implications. The latest order reopens the legal review of his sentence at the high court level.
