Kolkata, May 9, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on his 165th birth anniversary at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday, shortly before the historic swearing-in ceremony of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari as West Bengal’s first Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister.

The Prime Minister’s visit marked a significant moment as he honoured Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, one of India’s greatest literary and cultural icons, while also participating in a landmark political event that signals a major transformation in West Bengal’s political landscape.

Upon arriving at Brigade Parade Ground, Prime Minister Modi greeted enthusiastic supporters and waved to the gathered crowd. He was joined by West Bengal Leader of Opposition and Chief Minister-designate Suvendu Adhikari, who also paid floral tributes to Tagore.

BJP’s Historic Rise in West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari, elected as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party, is set to take oath as the state’s first BJP Chief Minister after the party secured a resounding victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

The BJP won a commanding 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state. The TMC, led by outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, secured 80 seats.

This electoral triumph is being viewed as a watershed moment in Bengal politics, with BJP leaders expressing optimism about ushering in a new era of governance.

BJP Leaders Express Confidence

Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said the new government under Adhikari would help realize the vision of “Sonar Bangla.”

“Under the leadership of Suvendu da, we will transform Bengal into Sonar Bangla. This victory belongs to every BJP worker and supporter,” Majumdar stated.

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul described Adhikari as the most suitable choice for the top post, highlighting his relentless political efforts over the past five years.

“Suvendu Adhikari has tirelessly fought both inside and outside the Assembly. All BJP MLAs must now work around the clock to deliver the progress West Bengal has long awaited,” Paul said.

Symbolic Tribute Before Political Transition

The tribute to Rabindranath Tagore ahead of the swearing-in ceremony added cultural significance to the day’s political developments, symbolizing a blend of Bengal’s rich heritage with a new administrative chapter.

As Suvendu Adhikari prepares to assume office, BJP supporters view the transition as a major step toward reshaping governance, development, and political priorities in the state. The ceremony at Brigade Parade Ground is expected to witness the presence of top BJP leadership, party workers, and thousands of supporters from across West Bengal.
