Israeli Police Detain Man Over Dual-Flag Kippah, Spark Debate on Expression

Rare incident in Tel Aviv region raises questions on symbolism, law, and civil liberties

Tel Aviv: Israeli police briefly detained a Jewish man for wearing a kippah featuring both Israeli and Palestinian flags, in an unusual incident that has drawn national attention and debate over freedom of expression.

The man, identified as Alex Sinclair, said he was approached by police while sitting at a café in Modiin after a passerby objected to his head covering. Officers allegedly told him the kippah violated the law and took him to a police station, where he was searched and held for a short period before being released.

Sinclair later claimed that when his kippah was returned, the portion displaying the Palestinian flag had been cut out. He described the item as a deeply personal religious symbol and expressed distress over its alleged damage.

In a statement, Israeli police confirmed the detention but said it followed a complaint about a man “wearing a kippah bearing a Palestinian flag.” Authorities added that he was released after a “clarification process,” without addressing claims that the item was altered.

While Israeli law does not explicitly ban the display of the Palestinian flag, authorities can act if they believe it poses a threat to public order or signals support for banned groups. Policies around such displays have been contentious, especially after directives issued by Itamar Ben Gvir in recent years.

Sinclair, who teaches at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said the kippah symbolised his belief in coexistence and mutual recognition of both Israeli and Palestinian identities. He has filed a complaint with internal police investigators, alleging unlawful detention and damage to property, and is seeking compensation.

The incident has triggered broader discussions within Israel about identity, dissent, and the limits of symbolic expression in a politically sensitive environment.
