New Delhi, March 12: The Ministry of Ayush will begin the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 with the organisation of Yoga Mahotsav-2026 on March 13 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The event is being organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) as part of preparations for the global celebration of yoga.
As part of the countdown initiative, the Ministry has partnered with various organisations to promote yoga in 100 cities across India during the next 100 days. The programme aims to expand awareness about yoga and encourage people from all walks of life to adopt it as a daily practice for better health and well-being.
The event will be attended by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav, along with senior officials including Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, yoga experts, medical professionals, and representatives from the wellness community.
Speaking ahead of the event, Jadhav noted that the International Day of Yoga, observed annually on June 21, was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014 following an initiative by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the worldwide recognition of yoga reflects India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
According to the Ministry, preparations for the 12th International Day of Yoga in 2026 are already underway. The government plans to organise yoga activities at 100 iconic locations across the country, aiming to inspire wider public participation and promote holistic health.
Officials said the countdown programme will help strengthen outreach efforts and build momentum leading up to the main celebrations in June.
