India, WEF Partner to Launch Skills Accelerator for Future-Ready Workforce

MSDE Signs Landmark MoU with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to Deepen Cooperation in Vocational Education and Training

New Delhi | January 22, 2026- In a significant move to strengthen India’s skill development ecosystem and prepare its workforce for future industry demands, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The partnership aims to deepen collaboration in vocational education, skilling, and training through the launch of an India Skills Accelerator, a multi-stakeholder platform designed to bridge critical skill gaps and align workforce capabilities with global economic and technological trends.

Under the agreement, MSDE and WEF will work together to identify, scale, and accelerate innovative skilling solutions by fostering stronger public–private partnerships. The initiative will focus on strengthening India’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) ecosystem by ensuring closer alignment between education systems and evolving industry requirements.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of Education Jayant Chaudhary said the partnership marks a key milestone in India’s journey towards a globally competitive workforce. He noted that the India Skills Accelerator brings together government, industry, and academia to address current and emerging skill shortages, promote outcome-based skill financing, and encourage lifelong learning. The initiative, he added, is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Vision India@2047 roadmap.

Minister of State for Education  Sukanta Majumdar welcomed the collaboration, stating that it complements the objectives of NEP 2020 by integrating education with skilling and aligning curricula with future industry needs. He said the initiative would enhance the global employability of Indian youth, particularly in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, green energy, robotics, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing.

Industry leaders associated with the initiative underlined the importance of long-term investment in human capital. Sanjiv Bajaj, Co-Chair of the India Skills Accelerator and Chairman & Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv Ltd., said that skilling India’s large youth population is critical to converting the country’s demographic advantage into sustained economic growth. He added that industry-aligned and scalable skilling frameworks will be essential for achieving the goal of a developed India by 2047.

Shobana Kamineni, Co-Chair of the India Skills Accelerator and Executive Chairperson of Apollo Health Co, said the initiative strengthens the link between policy and on-ground implementation. She emphasised that mobilising industry, educators, and innovators will help translate emerging workforce needs into sustainable employment opportunities and position India as a trusted global talent hub.

According to the ministry, the Skills Accelerator will promote lifelong learning, upskilling, and reskilling, while encouraging flexible curricula, integration of vocational and higher education pathways, and mutual recognition of qualifications. MSDE will work closely with institutions and regulatory bodies such as AICTE and UGC to support awareness, implementation, and scaling of the initiative.

The collaboration will also focus on innovative financing models for skilling, international employability, and identifying global demand-supply trends across job roles. Special emphasis will be placed on future-of-work domains, including artificial intelligence, robotics, green technologies, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing, along with innovation-driven activities such as hackathons and structured action plans.

The implementation of the MoU will be guided by a governance framework involving co-chairs from government and the private sector, in partnership with the World Economic Forum. MSDE will lead strategic direction, stakeholder coordination, and impact assessment.

Officials said the agreement reflects strong inter-ministerial coordination involving MSDE, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of External Affairs. The partnership builds on momentum generated during India’s participation in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos in 2025, where skill development was highlighted as a key driver of inclusive growth.

Through this collaboration, India aims to accelerate skilling reforms, strengthen global linkages, and establish itself as a leading global centre for skilled talent and innovation.
