New Delhi– Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a two-day visit to Assam on January 17 and 18, 2026, during which he will participate in a major cultural event and launch key infrastructure and connectivity initiatives aimed at boosting the region’s development.
On January 17, the Prime Minister will attend “Bagurumba Dwhou 2026”, a landmark cultural programme celebrating the rich heritage of the Bodo community, at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. The event will witness a historic performance as over 10,000 Bodo artists come together for a single, synchronised presentation of the traditional Bagurumba dance. Participants from 81 Assembly constituencies across 23 districts of Assam will take part in the programme.
Bagurumba, a traditional folk dance of the Bodo community, is deeply inspired by nature and symbolises harmony, joy, fertility and peace. Known for its graceful movements that imitate butterflies, birds and blooming flowers, the dance holds immense cultural importance and is closely linked with festivals such as Bwisagu (Bodo New Year) and Domasi.
On January 18, Prime Minister Modi will visit Kaliabor in Nagaon district, where he will perform the Bhoomi Pujan for the ambitious Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project, with an investment of over ₹6,950 crore. The 86-kilometre project includes a 35-kilometre elevated wildlife corridor passing through Kaziranga National Park, along with bypasses and the widening of existing highway stretches under NH-715.
Designed as an environmentally sensitive project, the corridor aims to ensure safe and uninterrupted movement of wildlife, reduce human-animal conflict, enhance road safety and significantly improve connectivity to Upper Assam, including Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. The project will pass through Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts, and includes bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat to ease urban congestion and improve local mobility.
During the same programme, the Prime Minister will also flag off two new Amrit Bharat Express trains—the Guwahati (Kamakhya)–Rohtak service and the Dibrugarh–Lucknow (Gomti Nagar) service. These trains are expected to strengthen rail connectivity between the Northeast and Northern India, offering safer, faster and more convenient travel options for passengers.
The Prime Minister’s visit underscores the government’s continued focus on promoting cultural heritage, sustainable infrastructure, and enhanced connectivity in the Northeast region.
