New Delhi, January 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed Pongal celebrations in the national capital, describing the harvest festival as a global symbol of Tamil heritage and cultural pride. Greeting the gathering in Tamil, the Prime Minister said Pongal is no longer confined to one region but is celebrated worldwide by those who value Tamil traditions.

Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said Pongal reflects gratitude towards farmers, nature, and the Sun, while also teaching harmony between family, society, and the environment. He noted that the festival season across India—marked by celebrations such as Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Magh Bihu—highlights the country’s cultural diversity rooted in agriculture.

Highlighting the central role of farmers in Tamil society, the Prime Minister said ancient Tamil literature, including the Thirukkural, places agriculture at the core of life. He described farmers as vital contributors to India’s self-reliance journey and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to their empowerment.

The Prime Minister said Pongal also carries an important message of environmental responsibility. He stressed that respect for nature must become a daily habit, not just a sentiment. Referring to initiatives such as Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and Amrit Sarovar, he said sustainable agriculture, water conservation, natural farming, agritech innovation, and value addition will define the future of Indian farming.

Prime Minister Modi also praised Tamil youth who are adopting sustainable and natural farming practices, saying their efforts are shaping a greener and more resilient agricultural ecosystem. He urged young farmers to expand this movement, ensuring food security, economic stability, and environmental protection.

Calling Tamil culture one of the world’s oldest living civilizations, the Prime Minister said it bridges the past with the future and inspires modern India to progress while staying rooted in tradition. He concluded by extending Pongal greetings once again and wishing prosperity and happiness to all.

The celebration was hosted at the New Delhi residence of Union Minister Dr. L. Murugan, with several Union Ministers and dignitaries in attendance.
