The Impressive TimesNEW DELHI, 2 APRIL 2025: Northern Railway has designated the financial year 2024-25 as a landmark chapter in its history, registering record growth in all avenues of revenue generation while focusing on passenger comfort and technology up-gradation. Sh. Ashok Kumar Verma, General Manager Northern Railway informed that displaying resilience and ingenuity, Northern Railway generated a total originating revenue of Rs. 23,719.41 crore, recording 13.05% growth over the previous year. This expansion was fueled by impressive performances in passenger services, freight operations, and establishing new records in operational efficiency. The GM added that revenue from passengers continued to be the bedrock of success with an addition of Rs. 12,850.38 crore contributed by crores of regular daily commuters. Revenue from goods improved significantly at 16.13% at Rs. 7,757.49 crore on the strength of a historic 55.67 million tonnes loading of goods exceeding both targets and last year’s performance.
Beyond traditional revenue streams, Northern Railway unlocked new opportunities through non-fare initiatives. During the year 2024-25 Northern Railway has earned Rs. 64.44 crore from Parking, an increase of 39% over last year, while revenue from Catering climbed by 10.73% to Rs. 419.54 crore. The railway also embraced modern commercial strategies, awarding contracts for platform naming rights at New Delhi Railway Station, introducing India’s first EV charging and parking facilities at Haridwar and Shahjahanpur stations, and installing medical outlets and parcel services at key hubs to cater to evolving passenger needs.
Dedicated to serving communities, Northern Railway launched special initiatives for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, providing improved catering and crowd handling to pilgrims in the Lucknow division. Digitalization came into being as a game-changer, with QR codes at counters, 117 ATVM kiosks, making ticketing easy.
As Northern Railway moves forward, its emphasis is on maintaining growth through infrastructure up-gradation, green initiatives, and state-of-the-art technology. With a heritage of bringing people together and fueling progress, the zone continues to set standards for excellence in railway network.
