Chandigarh, December 10: Reiterating the state government’s firm commitment to ensure the welfare of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday announced massive recruitment to fill the backlog of vacant posts for persons with disabilities in various departments. Presiding over a review meeting of the Department of Social Justice and Child Welfare at his official residence here, the Chief Minister said that the state government has identified a backlog of vacancies for persons with disabilities in various departments. He said that so far 1754 posts of direct recruitment and 556 posts of promotion have been identified as backlog in various departments. Bhagwant Singh Mann asked the officials to speed up the process of filling these vacant posts as soon as possible.

The Chief Minister has also given approval to amend the rules of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and said that this amendment of the rules will help in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. He said that persons with disabilities are the real heroes of the society because they show good performance in life despite many difficulties. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the state government is making strenuous efforts to ensure that all such people live with dignity.

The Chief Minister said that it is a matter of pride that the state government has taken many steps for the all-round development of disabled persons. He said that recently the state government has provided the facility of free bus travel to the dependents of the blind and a notification in this regard is being issued soon. Bhagwant Singh Mann said that Punjab Roadways and PRTC. A 50 per cent concession has been given to disabled persons in bus fares and Rs 2.19 crore has been spent during 2023-24 benefiting 7.5 lakh passengers.

The Chief Minister further said that the State Government has covered 2.65 lakh disabled persons under the State Pension Scheme and an amount of Rs 278.17 crore has been paid to the beneficiaries during 2024-25. He said that an amount of Rs.3.37 crore has been paid as scholarship to 12607 beneficiaries to promote education among disabled children. Bhagwant Singh Mann further informed that the state government has initiated SIPDA to make 144 government buildings suitable for persons with disabilities. An amount of Rs 23.16 crore has been released under the scheme.

The Chief Minister said that in order to give disabled persons a chance to live with dignity, the state government has facilitated 105 disabled persons to get loans worth Rs. 1.31 crore at subsidized interest rates during the last two years. He said that 21 disabled persons have been given booths from various organizations like Milkfed, Markfed and other organizations. Bhagwant Singh Mann further said that the state government will use every means for the welfare of this section of the society.
