New Delhi : The Congress party escalated its protest against defamatory remarks targeting its leader Rahul Gandhi by filing a police complaint against Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu for his alleged statement calling the Congress MP the “number one terrorist of the country.” The complaint was lodged at Tughlak Road Police Station in New Delhi on Wednesday by senior Congress leader Ajay Maken, who was accompanied by All India Mahila Congress Committee (AIMCC) chief Alka Lamba.
The party’s action follows Bittu’s inflammatory remark, which was made during a public speech, and has caused outrage within the Congress ranks. Ajay Maken, acting as the party’s treasurer, formally submitted the complaint, citing that such statements not only slander Rahul Gandhi but also incite hatred and endanger his safety. Maken emphasized that it is crucial for political discourse to remain respectful, and such defamatory comments undermine democratic values.
In addition to Bittu, the Congress has also named three other political figures in its complaint: BJP leader Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, and Uttar Pradesh minister Raghuraj Singh. All three leaders are accused of making similar derogatory statements against Rahul Gandhi, intensifying what the Congress describes as a coordinated attempt to defame their leader.
The complaint filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) seeks legal action against Bittu and the other accused leaders for criminal defamation, promoting enmity, and making statements with the intent to incite violence or hatred. According to Maken, the remarks not only attack the personal integrity of Rahul Gandhi but also pose a threat to public order by encouraging divisive rhetoric.
Alka Lamba, who was present at the police station, echoed similar sentiments, condemning the use of inflammatory language in politics. She urged authorities to act swiftly to hold the accused accountable and to prevent further degradation of political discourse. Lamba called on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies to refrain from using such incendiary rhetoric against opposition leaders.
The Congress has signaled its intention to pursue legal action rigorously, with Maken stating that defamatory attacks on political leaders cannot be normalized or allowed to go unchecked. The party has also rallied its supporters to raise their voices against such hate speech, vowing to stand by Rahul Gandhi in the face of these attacks. The outcome of the police complaint is being closely watched as the Congress continues to demand accountability for the offensive remarks.
