New Delhi, July 15 2024 : Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has extended the judicial custody of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia for seven more days in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. The court will hear the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case next on July 22. Sisodia was produced in the court via video conferencing.
Arrest and Resignation:
Manish Sisodia, who also served as the excise minister in the Delhi government, was arrested by the CBI on February 26, 2023, in connection with the liquor policy case. He subsequently resigned from the Delhi cabinet on February 28, 2023. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) later arrested Sisodia in March 2023 in a money-laundering case linked to the now-scrapped policy.
Delhi Excise Policy Scam Case:
The controversy centers around the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which allegedly allowed cartelization and favored certain liquor traders who supposedly paid bribes for licenses. These allegations have been consistently refuted by the AAP. The policy was eventually scrapped, and Delhi Lt. Governor VK Saxena recommended a CBI probe. Following this, the ED registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
