Emergency Meeting Held to Address Diarrhea Outbreak in State Towns

Chandigarh, July 16: Chief Secretary Anurag Verma convened an urgent meeting on Tuesday with Deputy Commissioners from various districts following a concerning outbreak of Diarrhea in several towns across the state.

The meeting, attended by senior officials including Commissioner Municipal Corporations, ADCs, XENs, EOs, and Civil Surgeons, underscored the seriousness with which the state government is addressing the issue. Mr. Verma reiterated the directives of Chief Minister S Bhagwant Singh Mann to ensure 100% contamination-free drinking water across all Municipal Corporations and Municipal Committees.

He instructed the Deputy Commissioners and municipal officials to personally inspect vulnerable areas and slums to identify and rectify potential sources of water contamination promptly. Certifications verifying the provision of safe drinking water are to be obtained from all concerned municipal bodies and executive officers.

Principal Secretary of Water Supply and Sanitation was tasked with a similar assessment in rural areas, while XENs and SDOs were directed to conduct field visits to villages, focusing on areas susceptible to waterborne diseases.

Secretary of Health was instructed to increase the frequency of water sampling, particularly in slums and vulnerable zones, with immediate reporting and punitive action against responsible officers for any contaminated samples. Affected areas are to receive immediate supply of potable water through tankers, along with adequate distribution of chlorine tablets.

Mr. Verma emphasized the importance of providing free and efficient medical treatment to affected individuals and urged Deputy Commissioners to monitor the situation closely on a daily basis, ensuring strict adherence to the directives issued.

The meeting was attended by senior officials including Financial Commissioner Rural Development and Panchayats Alok Shekhar, Principal Secretary Water Supply and Sanitation Nilkanth S Avhad, Secretary Health Dr Abhinav, Secretary Local Government Ravi Bhagat, and Director Local Government Uma Shankar Gupta.
