ECI has ordered the revision of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir along with three other states

The Election Commission has directed the updation of electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir, with the qualifying date set for the 1st of next month. This step marks the initiation of preparations for the upcoming assembly elections in J&K. Additionally, the Commission has begun preparations for the forthcoming assembly polls in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand, with the electoral roll updation starting on 1st July as the qualifying date for these states as well.

The current terms of the assemblies in Haryana and Maharashtra will conclude in November this year, while in Jharkhand, it will end in January next year.

Previously, a Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls was conducted across all states and Union Territories with 1st January 2024 as the qualifying date. Following amendments to the Representation of the People Act, 1950, which now allows for four qualifying dates per year, the Commission has opted for a second Special Summary Revision with 1st July 2024 as the qualifying date in Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, and Jammu and Kashmir. This decision aims to provide ample opportunity for eligible citizens to enroll and participate in the upcoming elections.

The Election Commission emphasizes that updated and inclusive electoral rolls are crucial for ensuring free, fair, and credible elections.
