New Delhi : The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president, PT Usha, has defended the IOA medical team concerning Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification. Usha stated that Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the Chief Medical Officer of the Indian contingent, should not be held accountable for Phogat’s disqualification from the women’s 50 kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics.
In a statement released yesterday, the IOA emphasized that weight management in combat sports, such as wrestling, boxing, and judo, is the responsibility of each athlete and their personal coaching team. The IOA clarified that Dr. Pardiwala’s primary role was to assist with recovery and injury management during and after competitions.
Phogat was disqualified just before the finals for exceeding the weight limit of her 50 kg category. She has since appealed the disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, requesting a joint silver medal in the 50 kg weight category. The final decision on her appeal is expected to be announced tomorrow.
