Preeti Sudan Appointed as New UPSC Chairperson

Former Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan Takes Charge Following Manoj Soni's Resignation

New Delhi, July 31 2024 : Preeti Sudan, a former Union Health Secretary and a 1983 batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the chairperson of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Her appointment follows the resignation of Manoj Soni, who stepped down citing personal reasons.

Preeti Sudan will officially assume her new role on August 1. Her tenure as the UPSC chairperson will last until April 29, 2025, or until further orders. The appointment was confirmed in a letter addressed to UPSC Secretary Shashi Ranjan Kumar by Additional Secretary Manoj Kumar Dwivedi, following approval from President Droupadi Murmu.

Manoj Soni resigned earlier this month, nearly five years before the end of his tenure in 2029. His resignation, effective from July 31, came amid controversy involving probationary IAS officer Puja Khedkar, who allegedly used fraudulent disability and caste certificates for selection. However, sources have indicated that Soni’s resignation was unrelated to this issue.

Soni joined the UPSC as a member in 2017 and became the chairperson on May 16, 2023. The UPSC is responsible for conducting the Civil Services Examination (CSE) to recruit candidates for top government positions such as the IAS, IPS, and IFS.

Preeti Sudan’s appointment as the new UPSC chairperson marks a significant transition for the commission, which plays a crucial role in shaping India’s civil services.
