Congress leader Jairam Ramesh highlighted that a combination of slow wage growth and severe inflation had led to an unprecedented decline in real wages when adjusted for price rises. The Congress party, in light of this “decline in real wages,” has demanded a nationwide minimum wage of ₹400 per day ahead of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s Union Budget. In a statement, Congress General Secretary (Communication) Jairam Ramesh noted that various data sources, including the government’s own statistics, indicated that “workers can buy less today than they could 10 years ago.” He pointed out that the Labour Bureau’s Wage Rate Index showed real wages for laborers stagnated between 2014 and 2023, and actually declined between 2019 and 2024.
