Endocrine Society renames PCOS as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome

Move aims to better reflect hormonal and metabolic nature of condition affecting millions of women

New Delhi, May 13, 2026: The Endocrine Society, an international body of scientists and physicians focused on hormone related disorders, has announced a change in the name of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which will now be referred to as Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

The decision has been taken to better represent the complex hormonal and metabolic features of the condition, which is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting women of reproductive age worldwide.

PCOS has long been associated with irregular menstrual cycles, excess androgen levels, and ovarian cysts, but experts say the previous name did not fully capture its broader metabolic and endocrine implications, including insulin resistance and long term health risks.

The revised terminology is expected to improve clinical understanding, diagnosis, and awareness among both healthcare professionals and patients. Medical experts believe that a more comprehensive name may also help reduce confusion surrounding the condition and encourage earlier intervention.

Further guidelines regarding the adoption of the new terminology in clinical practice and research are expected to be issued in due course.
