IIS Partners Rowing Federation of India to Launch Women’s High Performance Programme

Elite training initiative aims to strengthen India’s medal prospects in international rowing competitions

New Delhi, March 25: The Inspire Institute of Sport has joined hands with the Rowing Federation of India to introduce a dedicated women’s rowing programme, marking a major step forward in the development of the sport in the country.

The initiative brings together 24 top women rowers who will train in a structured high-performance environment designed to prepare them for major international events, including the Asian Games and the Olympics.

The programme is being conducted at a specialized training facility in Bellary, Karnataka, equipped with a 2,300-metre water course that closely replicates international racing conditions, allowing athletes to train with consistency and precision.

The selection process involved a rigorous evaluation phase in February 2026, where around 30 athletes underwent detailed sports science assessments before the final squad was shortlisted.

Officials associated with the programme emphasized that the collaboration reflects a long-term vision to build a strong pipeline in women’s rowing, providing athletes with world-class infrastructure, coaching, and scientific support.

The initiative has already begun to show promising results, with Indian teams qualifying in key categories such as the women’s coxless pair and coxless four for upcoming international competitions.

According to stakeholders, the programme is not only about immediate performance but also about sustained growth, with plans for international exposure, overseas training, and collaboration with global experts in rowing.

The partnership also highlights the increasing focus on women’s participation in competitive sports, aiming to provide equal opportunities and resources to female athletes in disciplines that have traditionally received limited attention.

With advanced facilities, structured training modules, and long-term planning, the programme is expected to play a crucial role in elevating India’s presence in global rowing events.

As the sport continues to evolve globally, including its growing prominence in events like the Olympics, this initiative could serve as a foundation for India’s future success in rowing on the international stage.
