New Delhi, March 20: In a unique initiative aimed at promoting wellness during air travel, the Ministry of AYUSH has introduced a short in-flight yoga routine designed to help passengers stay active and relaxed even at cruising altitude.
The programme was unveiled during Yoga Mahotsav 2026 by Union Minister Prataprao Jadhav, who highlighted the importance of yoga as a preventive healthcare tool that can be practiced anywhere—including inside an aircraft.
Long-duration flights often lead to limited movement, which can cause stiffness, fatigue, poor blood circulation, and mental stress. In some cases, extended immobility may even increase the risk of conditions like Deep Vein Thrombosis.
Recognising these concerns, the ministry has developed a compact, five-minute yoga protocol that passengers can perform while seated, without requiring any special equipment.

The routine has been designed by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, keeping in mind the needs of frequent flyers and those undertaking long-haul journeys. It combines light physical movements, breathing exercises, and short meditation practices to improve both physical comfort and mental calmness during flights.
Officials stated that the initiative aims to make wellness accessible in everyday situations, especially in environments where movement is restricted.
The in-flight wellness sequence is simple and can be performed at the passenger’s seat:
A brief centering exercise to focus the mind
Gentle joint movements such as shoulder rolls and ankle rotations
Modified seated yoga postures to reduce stiffness and improve posture
Breathing techniques like controlled inhalation and exhalation to ease stress
A short meditation to promote relaxation
Experts from the ministry emphasised that incorporating small wellness practices into daily routines can significantly improve overall health. Regular movement and mindful breathing, even for a few minutes, can help reduce travel-related discomfort and fatigue.
The initiative is part of a broader effort by the government to integrate traditional wellness practices into modern lifestyles and encourage people to take proactive steps toward their health.
The ministry believes that yoga’s flexibility makes it suitable for any setting—be it home, office, or even thousands of feet above the ground. By introducing such easy-to-follow routines, authorities aim to build awareness about maintaining physical and mental balance during travel.
With increasing air traffic and longer travel durations, this initiative offers a practical solution for passengers to stay refreshed and energised throughout their journey.
