Shivraj Singh Chouhan Chairs High-Level Meet to Safeguard Agriculture Amid Global Crisis

Push for Farmer ID, strict action against hoarding, and round-the-clock monitoring to ensure smooth Kharif preparedness

New Delhi : Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a high-level review meeting to ensure stability in the agriculture sector and protect farmers’ interests amid ongoing global uncertainties.

The meeting focused on strategic preparedness for the upcoming Kharif season, with the minister directing officials to adopt a proactive approach in managing potential disruptions.

A key highlight was the emphasis on ensuring an equitable and uninterrupted supply of fertilizers. Chouhan instructed officials to expedite the implementation of the ‘Farmer ID’ system to enhance transparency and efficiency in distribution. He also indicated that a meeting with chief ministers and state agriculture ministers will be convened soon to review progress.

Taking a firm stance against market irregularities, the minister ordered strict action against black marketing and hoarding of fertilizers and seeds. He urged state governments to enforce stringent measures to curb such practices, especially in the context of global supply pressures.

The review also covered the availability of agro-chemicals and essential gases required for seed drying. Chouhan stressed the need to ensure adequate supply of packaging materials, particularly for milk and other agricultural produce, directing coordination with relevant ministries, including petroleum.

To strengthen monitoring, a dedicated ‘Special Cell’ has been set up for round-the-clock oversight of the agriculture sector. The cell will submit weekly reports on the availability of fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides directly to the minister.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Chouhan said all necessary steps are being taken to ensure timely availability of critical inputs and to safeguard the interests of farmers across the country.
