New Delhi May 15 2026: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly criticised the central government over the recent rise in fuel prices, describing it as a crisis created by the Modi led administration and blaming what he called a failure of leadership in handling global tensions, including the ongoing situation in West Asia.
Kharge said the increase in petrol and diesel prices is not merely a result of international developments but also reflects domestic policy decisions that have worsened the financial pressure on citizens. He argued that instead of insulating the economy from external shocks, the government has allowed price pressures to directly impact the public.
The Congress chief further linked the fuel price rise to broader concerns over governance, alleging that inadequate planning and response mechanisms have left common people vulnerable during global disruptions. He said the situation highlights gaps in decision making and accountability at the highest level.
His remarks come at a time when fuel prices have become a major political issue, with opposition parties repeatedly accusing the government of passing on the burden of global crude fluctuations to consumers without providing adequate relief measures.
