New Delhi, March 19, 2026: Former India cricketer and BJP MP Gautam Gambhir has approached the Delhi High Court alleging large-scale misuse of his identity through deepfake technology.
In his petition, Gambhir raised concerns over digitally altered videos and images circulating online that falsely depict him, warning that such content could mislead the public and damage his reputation. He termed the issue as a “systematic misuse” enabled by advanced artificial intelligence tools.
The plea seeks urgent intervention from the court to restrain unidentified individuals and platforms from creating, sharing, or amplifying such manipulated material.
Gambhir also urged authorities to frame stricter guidelines and enforcement mechanisms to tackle the growing threat of deepfakes, which are increasingly being used to impersonate public figures.
Legal experts note that the case could set an important precedent in addressing digital identity theft and regulating AI-generated content in India.
The matter is expected to be heard soon, with the court likely to examine the broader implications of deepfake misuse on privacy, public trust, and online safety.
The development comes amid rising global concerns over the misuse of emerging technologies, prompting calls for stronger legal frameworks to safeguard individuals against digital manipulation.
