New Delhi : In a major push towards modernization, Indian Railways has significantly enhanced its telecom and digital infrastructure during 2025–26, leveraging artificial intelligence and automation to improve passenger safety, operational efficiency, and overall travel experience.
A key highlight of this transformation is the rollout of automatic real-time train announcements, now operational at 1,405 railway stations. Powered by integration with the National Train Enquiry System, these systems ensure passengers receive timely and accurate updates regarding train schedules and platform information.
Passenger safety has also received a major boost with the installation of AI-enabled video surveillance systems at 1,874 stations. These advanced systems are capable of detecting intrusion and loitering in real time, while also incorporating facial recognition technology for enhanced monitoring and security.
Communication infrastructure—critical to railway operations—has been strengthened across 1,396 stations through the implementation of Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP-MPLS) technology. This unified telecom backbone supports essential services such as passenger reservation, unreserved ticketing, freight operations, and supervisory control systems, while also enabling centralized access to surveillance networks.
Further advancements include the deployment of Integrated Passenger Information Systems (IPIS), which combine electronic train indicator boards, coach guidance systems, and public announcement systems to deliver seamless information flow to passengers.
In challenging terrains, especially in projects like the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, tunnel communication systems are being installed to ensure uninterrupted radio connectivity between personnel inside tunnels and control rooms, enhancing safety and coordination.
These initiatives reflect Indian Railways’ commitment to building a future-ready, technology-driven ecosystem aligned with the broader vision of Digital India. By integrating AI, automation, and robust communication systems, the national transporter is steadily moving towards a safer, smarter, and more passenger-centric railway network.
