Peru Court Sentences Former President Ollanta Humala to 15 Years for Money Laundering

Mexico City, Apr 16 ,2025 : In a landmark ruling, the Criminal Court of Peru on Tuesday sentenced former President Ollanta Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, to 15 years in prison over charges of money laundering linked to illegal campaign financing.

According to an official court statement, the Third National Collegial Criminal Court found both Humala and Heredia guilty of laundering illicit funds received during presidential campaigns.

Peruvian media reported from the courtroom that, in addition to their prison sentences, the couple has been ordered to pay a fine of $670,000. Nadine Heredia’s brother received a 12-year jail term, while four additional defendants were handed sentences ranging from five to eight years.

Humala, who served as President of Peru from 2011 to 2016, was first arrested in February 2023. Prosecutors alleged that his 2006 and 2011 presidential campaigns were funded through illegal donations.

Investigations revealed that financial contributions came from foreign sources, including the Venezuelan government and Brazilian construction conglomerates Odebrecht (now Novonor) and OAS — both of which have been implicated in widespread corruption scandals across Latin America.

This verdict marks one of the most high-profile convictions of a former Peruvian leader in recent years, reinforcing Peru’s judiciary’s stance on political corruption and illicit campaign financing.
